Carol sat at the bar of Tudorâs deserted pub and watched the man disintegrate a little more with the scanning of each page of the folder sheâd handed him. She and Mavis had decided against editing her findings, and sheâd guessed he wouldnât be happy to read what sheâd discovered about Huw Hughes. However, she hadnât expected him to be so deflated; his usually robust frame seemed to shrink before her.
âThe deaths of his wives are highly suspect,â said the landlord eventually. He sounded sad, and grim. He looked directly into Carolâs eyes and added, âHow can we get her to see him for the man he really is?â
Carol thought sheâd better clarify what Tudor meant. âYou mean, how can we get Annie to see that Huw has buried three wives who died under questionable circumstances?â
Tudor nodded, then sighed so deeply Carol thought heâd pass out for lack of oxygen. âYouâre her friend, canât you show her this?â He waggled the folder under Carolâs nose.
Carol pondered the ethics of what Tudor was asking. âDo you think thatâs a good idea? Annie might not be too keen on the fact Iâve been poking about into the background of someone she knows, nor that you asked me to do it.â
âCounterproductive, then,â said Tudor unhappily.
âI reckon.â
âSo how then? How can we get her to see sense? It looks as though this man really might be a killer after all. Iâll admit that was my suspicion, but it looks like you have real evidence here.â His eyes pleaded with Carol.
âNot evidence, Tudor, but I do believe Iâve managed to join up quite a few circumstantial dots.â She was annoyed when her phone rang in her pocket. Reflexively pulling it out to check who was calling, Carol felt a ripple of annoyance when she saw a text from Mavis: Phone me. Now. URGENT!!!! âYou have a think about it, while I make an urgent call. Sorry, Tudor.â
She swung her legs down off the barstool and took a few steps toward the fireplace, which offered a little more privacy, and speed-dialled her colleague. âHi Mavis, Iâm with Tudor, is this really urgent?â
âAye, it is that,â replied Mavis tartly, âbut Iâll be quick. Iâm up at Chellingworth Hall where all hell has broken out; the police are here to gather evidence in a criminal case. Itâs believed Dr Clive Priddle might have died as a result of strychnine poisoning, and theyâre looking into the possibility the source was the tea served to the croquet teams here on Sunday afternoon, due to the fact many others who attended were taken ill. Weâre not involved, directly, because the police are quite properly in control, but Annie, Althea and I feel weâd like to gain our own insights. Weâll need your help, please. Background checks. Fast. Youâll be up for that, I assume. It sounds like youâve finished the work . . . you were doing.â
Carol judged Annie might be able to overhear Mavis, and that explained her colleagueâs circumspection. âI have.
